An Endangered François’ langur was born at Whipsnade Zoo’s Monkey Forest on the early hours of Saturday 17 February. Now the conservation zoo is asking for the public help to name the new arrival.
Zookeepers at the UK’s largest zoo have been able to sex the bright orange infant already, confirming that it’s a boy!
Whipsnade’s Animals Operations Manager Hayley Jakeman said the public and visitors have been very excited and curious about the new arrival, who visitors will be able to see in the brand new Monkey Forest habitat which opens to the public this Easter.
"We’re looking for a name which really celebrates how important this little monkey is. François’ langurs are sadly Endangered, and in China and Vietnam their numbers continue to fall in the wild. It really makes the birth of this male internationally important and a chance to celebrate," Hayley said.
Hayley added: “The public have until Sunday 17 March to suggest a name, and the François’ langur keepers will choose their favourite from all of those submitted. The winner will receive free tickets to Whipsnade Zoo, as well as a guided preview of Monkey Forest – we can’t wait to see all the suggestions!”
T&Cs apply.
The window for entries will close at midnight on 17 March 2024.
The prize is non-transferable and includes a family pass (two adult tickets and two children) to Whipsnade Zoo with a private guided tour of Monkey Forest.
The winning name will be selected by Whipsnade zookeepers team from the list of names suggested. The keepers’ decision is final.
If a name is submitted by multiple parties and selected by the keepers, those parties will go into a random draw and a winner will be selected.
